## How unclaimed money works (the same in every state)

When a business or government agency loses track of you — you move, change your name, or forget an account — it must eventually hand the money to the state as "unclaimed property" after a dormancy period. Each state runs its own free program to return it. Common types: forgotten bank accounts, uncashed paychecks and refunds, insurance payouts, utility and rental deposits, dividends, and safe-deposit contents. It's your money; claiming it is free.
